Well, that was only an example of where to draw the line. "Here, have this crappy green" is usually fine but "Here, go buy Drok's Armor with this money and these materials" isn't. If you run around in max weapons and max armor against level four enemies, you won't learn how to play. You'll learn to run around, aggro everything, and stand around auto-attacking until it's all dead. Later, you'll discover that this might not be the winning strategy you thought (and possibly ragequit then).

By the time someone gets to Tombs they've probably proven themselves an adequate player. There's a minimum of four missions to get there, plus the Doppelganger fight. Now, you could get your hand held through all that, but it's not as likely to happen there as earlier on.

I'm not very helpful towards newbies really. There were times where I would go to Ascalon or some other starter area, and hand out free green weapons, not anymore. One thing that kind of put me off was a supposed newbie asking for free handouts so she/he could afford starting armor at Ascalon. I gave him/her about 1.5k which should of been plenty at the time, but they just kept on begging even after that.
When I first started this game, I was usually broke, but found ways to make money for new armor just by grabbing the henches and killing things. Scrapping what I could for materials, or buying them, etc., it wasn't really hard to do. I also figured out a majority of this game on my own, and didn't really ask too many questions, unless I really didn't understand something. Didn't have a prima guide either. So, it's a little irritating when I hear somebody ask a lazy question in town like, "Where's the armor guy?" or "Where's the storage?". Umm, have you looked? Or are you just one of those people that have to make others work for you, because you're just that lazy. If you ran around town long enough, you could find everything there. Another one I heard a while back when the Luxons and Kurziks were around Kryta, "Where are the Luxons?", I felt like saying, "Over there. Why don't you go outside and look.".
Is this kind of how the newer generation of kids are? Don't want to figure anything out for themselves, or work for anything? If so, I no longer have sympathy for newbies, unless maybe they need help with a quest or mission.

Dude! I have this with my little brother! He asks me things about the computer because he doesn't know what to do, then I'm like: "hey, I figured it out the hard way, why can't you?" I end up helping him every single time.
The reason the new generation is doing this because there is an old generation that knows. Why go look for yourself when there are lot's of people who can direct you?

Heh, well, I think the more self reliant a person teaches themselves to be, the less likely they are to ask for things in the future. If you take the easy way out most of your life, what's gonna happen to you when there's nobody around? Just give up? Or maybe start cranking those brain cells and putting them to some use. Otherwise, you could end up needing other people all your life, and fail to think for yourself. Computer skills are a bit different though, not everybody understands things like that. Just like how I wouldn't be able to repair a car, but books can be your friends.

Very true, however so is the "can" in there. I have encountered plenty of books with a very sh**ty way of explaining things, sometimes making it even more difficult to figure out.
Tip: Do not buy a 4-page how-to manual for anything more complex than asembling relativly simple furniture.

I dont mind answering questions, helping with missions, giving advice...etc etc.. ive made a few long term friends this way..then again, none of them would have the audacity to ask for 20k for new armor....

I will be more than happy to give advice or help with a skill set or reccommendations on which skill would i prefer or what do i do in this situation etc... but under no circumstances will i give away things anymore. I have foudn that this creates more of a problem than it has helped. There are two things that come out of doing this. Grateful people that generally appreciate the help seeing as they dont have much being new, and beggars. the people that after you give them something pm you constantly asking if you have this, or can help them by donating money for that.
if i see someone begging for money/items/materials i will give them advice on what to do or where to go to get what they are wanting, but i wont give out anything anymore.
The only people that ever get anything from me are guildies/friends ingame/aliance thats only if i cant use it or they catch me in a good mood

I think you should help a newb if he wants help. You dont need to do incredible stuff, just teach him how to move around, how to fight, loot, maybe give him a good weapon for a start and help him lvl up 1-2 lvls, then say bye and good luck, thats it.

I think you should do what you want. If you want to help, help. If you don't want to, then don't. Who cares?

It helps pass the time when selling off my stuff to answer questions that come up. It doesn't bother me in the least when someone new to Droks asks "Where's Storage?" I don't mind pointing out to someone trying to sell something for a price that's way off - either too high or too low. (I always Whisper, out of courtesy). Ususally I'll get a thank you, sometimes no reply, and rarely something uncalled for. Once, someone - who was selling something really cheap - said "I know, just giving people a break."
I never give to beggers or dancers. When I'm in Droks and there's a begger or 2, I advise them that they can get free money from Ipillu Whupwup in Whitman's Folly!. (It's amazing how many people don't get my meaning when I say that.)

I would have to say in 1 or 2 missions/quest is ok beyond that if they are in guild it should be the guilds role. This is unless they in a 1 or 2 man guild if so and you are helping them it would be wise of them to join your guild and fold theirs.I believe that is what is mostly whats wrong with game to many guilds and not enough knowledge of the game. That is why those in a 1st char. get a run to Droks and i hear small runs going on in Cantha.

When I get bored, I head to Minister Cho's Estate on my monk and offer to help people through the mission. Not do it for them, nor tell them how to do it. I never fire a single spell or attack at any monster, just offer a breeze or orison when needed. I answer general questions, and sometimes give out extra gold weapons that I might have on-hand, should I find someone that I thin doesn't have a handful of level 20s on the side [usually I look for guildless players].
As to whether we should or should not help newbie players - I agree with what Numa said:
